The Records Unit operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year with a staff of 18 Records Specialists and Supervisors. They enter data from police reports written by officers in the field. The data is subsequently stored and used for mandatory reporting requirements to the state and federal governments and for crime prevention or investigation purposes.
The unit processes requests for police reports or crime data from a wide variety of requestors. This includes the law enforcement-legal community, insurance companies, crime victims, the press, and members of the public with a legal right to the information and in response to legal subpoenas.
Employees in this unit help 40-50 people at the front counter and field approximately 300 telephone calls per day. They also handle 50-70 radio requests from officers in the field every day. The officers request such information as criminal history and warrant information, driving record or vehicle information. It is not uncommon for the Records Unit to process 14,000 police reports and 8,300 moving and mechanical violation citations annually. |
